  4. Found only in Australia, the lovable little koala is not a bear

  6. at all, but a marsupial, like a kangaroo.  At birth, the koala is

  8. only 1 inch long and must crawl into its mother's pouch to finish

  10. developing.  It remains there for six months, and then rides on
  11.  
  12. its mother's back for another year.  The koala is a "nocturnal"
  13.  
  14. (active at night) animal who sleeps an average of 18 hours a day.

  16. Generally about 2 feet long and weighing 25 pounds, an adult
  17.  
  18. koala lives to be about 12 years old.  At one time, it was thought
  19.  
  20. that their only food was eucalyptus tree leaves.  Now, however,
  21.  
  22. it has been found that the koala will also eat other tree  leaves.
